China's overseas patents grew explosively in recent years. This paper studies how Chinese exporters make use of overseas patents to facilitate their exports. We study this question by utilizing Chinese exports' overseas patents. It is found that exports in value are positively associated with the patent stock owned by the exporter effective in the export destination countries. After decomposing the values to prices and quantities, it is found that the positive relationship is mainly driven by the positive impact on export quantities rather than prices, which suggests that patents granted by foreign local governments allow Chinese exporters to expand their presence there. Across different sectors, we find the positive effect associated with effective patent stocks is mainly driven by the industries excluding the information and communication technology (ICT) sectors. For ICT industries, we find good evidence for the traditional market power effect.
