Abstract:

Using novel administrative data on the universe of firms in China, we study how tropical cyclones, the natural disaster that causes the largest direct economic losses worldwide, could be a source of creative destruction. We find that the occurrence of tropical cyclones during a firm’s first year of establishment leads to a higher likelihood of closure in the succeeding years. However, innovative firms are more likely to survive. Therefore, natural disasters have the potential for creative destruction because they may drive out the less innovative firms and select the more innovative ones for survival. Furthermore, the selection is stronger for the medium strength of tropical cyclones, for privately owned firms, and in regions with more local knowledge accumulation.

摘要：利用中国企业的新管理数据，我们研究了热带气旋，这种造成全球最大直接经济损失的自然灾害，是如何成为创造性破坏的来源的。我们发现，在公司成立的第一年，热带气旋的发生导致公司在随后几年倒闭的可能性更高。然而，创新企业更有可能生存下来。因此，自然灾害具有创造性破坏的潜力，因为它们可能会驱逐创新能力较弱的企业，选择创新能力较强的企业生存。此外，对于中等强度的热带气旋、私营企业和地方知识积累较多的地区，这种选择更强。

戚树森现任厦门大学管理学院财务学系副教授、博士生导师、北京大学数字金融研究中心特约研究员。2017年获荷兰马斯特里赫特大学金融学博士学位并于同年加入厦门大学管理学院。研究领域为银行学和公司金融，研究成果发表于 Journal of International Business Studies、Review of Finance等杂志。
